IMG_0179Here’s a large terrarium I just finished, sans the deerskin “skirt” it was eventually draped with. The piece is called “Totem”, and it has a pedestal surrounded by a hand-constructed wooden cage; a bowl composition of spiny plants; and a sculptural cow vertebra with 8-inch “wingspan” (hence the reference to thunderbird). The natural forms of cacti and succulents such as echeveria, prickly pear, pachypodium, “Old Man of the Andes” – so nicknamed for its long white hairs, and the fact that it can grow to 6ft. if transplanted – are wonderfully suggestive and beautiful. For that I am willing to be picking spines out of my skin and clothes a day or three later.  ~ Lisa Kinoshita
