THE BOLD AND THE BLACK – August 18-October 1, 2016
Please join us in welcoming master sumi painter, Selinda Sheridan, at Matter: Tacoma made modern on Thursday, Aug. 18, 5-8pm. After receiving a Ph.D in Chinese, Sheridan chose the path of sumi painting for the next 30 years. In her hands, the ancient form takes on a paradoxical power and simplicity that describes modernity. “Literature opened up new ways of thought and self expression. My imagination is inspired by seed images from poetry and dreams, by the changing qualities of weather and seasons, and by the music of silence,” she says. The Bold and the Black is a series of six dramatic ink paintings on view at Matter through Oct. 1, 2016. In addition to brush painting and soaring calligraphy, Sheridan experiments in mixed media, paper sculpture, assemblage and writing.
Also on view: “SPECTRAL”, an installation by Elise Richman investigating the structure of color in nature; and original ceramics by Melissa Balch. In case you haven’t checked us out yet, Matter: Tacoma made modern (821 Pacific Ave.) is a new downtown design showroom shared by 3 local makers: contemporary furniture artists rePly (www.replyfurniture.com) and birdloft (www.birdloft.com), and vintage furnishings and art purveyor, Moss + Mineral. We are open noon-6 on Saturdays, by chance and by appointment.
