Our Story.

We are continually learning and exploring.

As a nature lovers and artists, Ted and Jacey Lucas founded Moss and Mineral as a way to share their appreciation for the natural world with others. Their environmental education goods are playful and whimsical while exploring themes of ecology, biodiversity, and conservation. Their popular DIY bee house kit was featured in Buzzfeed in “36 Products That’ll Make Being Outdoors More Fun.”

Jacey’s love for the natural world (and especially plants) was strongly influenced by her Korean immigrant mother, who would often forage for wild edible plants. She grew up perceiving the wild as a nourishing place. Formally trained as a designer, Jacey established Ten Eleven Design (tenelevendesign.com), an award-winning design studio with a focus on creating educational exhibitions for museums and gardens. The source for creative inspiration has always been found in her ever-deepening wonder and curiosity about the natural world. In addition to her work with Ten Eleven Design and Moss and Mineral, Jacey’s path includes work as an elementary-age educator and, most recently, she completed her certification in Woodland Stewardship from Penn State Extension.

Ted’s passion lies in exploring the craft of woodworking with a focus on reclaimed and foraged wood. With a background in engineering, he has a natural ability to construct and bring ideas into three dimensions.

Nature transcends our tendencies to label and classify, to reduce and limit. The natural world is unfathomably more rich, interwoven, and complicated than we are taught, and so much more mysterious and beautiful.”
